How I Installed Firefox Developer Edition on Ubuntu 20.04
I've recently enjoyed the Firefox Developer Edition. It has cutting-edge features for web programming and ahead in terms of updates and more features.
In this blog, we'll discuss how I installed FDE on my Ubuntu OS. I chose not to include the PPA method since I've read that it may not be stable when it comes to specific versions. You can also install FDE via Ubuntu Make, but we're not going to discuss that here. Here's a link if you want to install it the non-manual way.
Here are the instructions I've followed while installing FDE (Manual method):
- You should have another browser open when installing Firefox. Why? Because you're going to replace the default with the DE version.
Step 1. Download the
.tar file from the FDE website
Step 2. Open your terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and
cd into your Downloads folder
Step 3. Copy the
.tar file to the
sudo mv -rf firefox-90.0b5.tar.bz2 /opt
Step 4. Cd to your home directory
Step 5. Navigate to your
Step 6. Extract the
.tar file in that folder
sudo tar xjf firefox-90-0b5.tar.bz2
Step 7. Change the ownership
chown of the folder to root (so that it gets updated along with System Updates)
sudo chown -R $USER /opt/firefix
Step 8. Open the
.bashrc file with nano
Step 9. Paste this command line at the end of the document to set the path for the executable file. Press
Ctrl + S to save afterward.
Step 10. Create a desktop file for your launcher. Simply paste all of the commands
cat > ~/.local/share/applications/firefoxDeveloperEdition.desktop <<EOL [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=Firefox Developer Edition Exec=/opt/firefox/firefox Icon=/opt/firefox/browser/chrome/icons/default/default128.png Terminal=false Type=Application Categories=Network;WebBrowser;Favorite; MimeType=text/html;text/xml;application/xhtml_xml;x-scheme-handler/http;x-scheme-handler/https;x-scheme-handler/ftp; X-Ayatana-Desktop-Shortcuts=NewWindow;NewIncognitos; EOL
And that's it! Your FDE should show up in your Unity Launcher.
Tell me how it went. 👏
